What we collect

  • Account information. When you sign up with GitHub or Google we receive your name, email address, avatar and public profile from that provider. With email signup, we store your email and a hashed password.
  • GitHub sync data. If you connect GitHub, we import your public pinned repositories, bio, avatar and repository languages. We only read public data and you can remove imported items or disconnect sync at any time.
  • Content you create. Posts, project descriptions, skills and profile details you add are stored so we can serve your site. Uploaded images have EXIF metadata (including location) stripped before storage.
  • Portfolio analytics. We count page views on your portfolio. Visitor IP addresses are one-way hashed before storage — we cannot recover the original address, and we don't build visitor profiles.

Cookies

We set one httpOnly session cookie to keep you signed in — it is never readable by JavaScript. A second cookie remembers your light/dark theme preference. That's it: no third-party ad or tracking cookies.

How your data is used

  • To render your public portfolio and blog on your subdomain.
  • To power community features — the feed, follows, reactions and badges.
  • To email you the things you opt into (like a weekly digest for Pro users).
  • To keep the platform safe — abuse prevention and rate limiting.

What we never do

  • Sell or rent your personal data. To anyone. Ever.
  • Show ads or share data with ad networks.
  • Read private repositories — our GitHub scope is public data only.

Sharing

We use a small number of infrastructure providers (hosting, storage, email delivery, payment processing for Pro) that process data on our behalf under their own confidentiality obligations. Payment card details go directly to our payment processor and never touch our servers. We disclose data only if legally required.

Your content is public by design

HeyGeeks is a publishing platform: your portfolio, published posts and directory profile are public. Drafts stay private until you publish them, and you can unlist yourself from the developer directory in settings.

Your rights

You can export your posts, correct your profile, or delete your account from the dashboard at any time. Deletion removes your profile, posts, uploads and analytics from our systems; cached copies of public pages expire within minutes. For anything else, email mohit@heygeeks.in.

For users in India

HeyGeeks is operated from India, and we handle personal data in accordance with the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 (DPDP Act) and the Information Technology Act, 2000. As a Data Principal under the DPDP Act you have the right to access, correct and erase your personal data, and to nominate someone to exercise these rights on your behalf — the account tools described above cover access, correction and erasure, and you can email us for anything they don't.

Grievance Officer

In accordance with the Information Technology Act, 2000 and the rules made thereunder, you can reach our Grievance Officer at mohit@heygeeks.in. We acknowledge complaints within 24 hours and aim to resolve them within 15 days.

Changes

If this policy changes materially, we'll note it here and — for significant changes — email account holders before it takes effect.
